Adams, McClendon top all-around fields at 2023 Hopes Championships

HOFFMAN ESTATES, Illinois – Paityn Adams (Rowlett, Texas/Metroplex Gymnastics) and Jaysha McClendon (Scottsdale, Ariz./Rebound Gymnastics West) each topped their respective all-around fields Friday afternoon at the 2023 Hopes Championships in Hoffman Estates, Illinois.

Adams posted a score of 48.800 overall to claim all-around gold in the 13-14 age group. She took the balance beam and floor exercise titles with a pair of 12.450s and was fifth on uneven bars (11.250) and sixth on vault (12.650). The winner of Hopes Classic last month in Katy, Texas, Greta Krob (Tipton, Iowa/IGN) was second with a 47.950, and Aki Tanda (Sunnyvale, Calif./Airborne Gymnastics Training Center) rounded out the podium in third with a 47.450. Gabbie Mitchell (Lawrenceville, Ga./Georgia Elite Gymnastics) set the bar on vault with a 13.250 while Si Qi Gundrum (Kewaskum, Wis./Salto Gymnastics Center) notched the highest score on bars with a 12.300.

The Hopes Classic champion in the 11-12 age group, McClendon led the way in the all-around with a 50.200 for gold. McClendon also was the bars champion (13.350), placed second on vault (13.250) and floor (11.950), and tied with Brynley Applegate (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/IGN) for ninth on beam (11.650). Amia Pugh-Banks (Newport News, Va./World Class Gymnastics) claimed all-around silver with a 48.550 and Kylie Smith (Loveland, Ohio/Cincinnati Gymnastics) won bronze with a 48.000. Pugh-Banks also collected vault (13.350) and beam (12.200) gold, while Daisy Lesperance (Fort Mill, S.C./Bull City Gymnastics) topped the floor standings (12.000).

The 2023-24 Hopes National Team was named following Friday’s competition. Team members are listed alphabetically by division below.
