Wong golden at U.S. Classic in return to elite competition

WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah (July 30, 2022) – Reigning World all-around silver medalist Leanne Wong (Overland Park, Kan./Great American Gymnastics Express) snared the senior all-around, vault and balance beam titles Saturday evening, as women’s competition at the 2022 U.S. Classic concluded at Maverik Center.

Wong, who earned team silver at the NCAA Championships with Florida earlier in the year, delivered a 54.400 to claim all-around gold in her first elite appearance of 2022. Shilese Jones (Auburn, Wash./Ascend Gymnastics Center) was second behind a 54.050, and Katelyn Rosen (Boerne, Texas/Twin City Twisters) rounded out the top three with a 52.500.

Wong paced the field on vault and balance beam with scores of 13.900 (14.400, 13.400) and 13.500, respectively. In her first competition on podium in 2022, Jones captured the uneven bars title with a 14.500, and Rosen topped the standings on floor exercise with a 13.700.

The U.S. Classic will wrap Sunday with junior and senior men set to take the floor at 2:30 p.m. ET and a second senior men’s session to follow at 8:30 p.m. ET.
