West, Lee win U.S. Challenge all-around titles

HOFFMAN ESTATES, Ill., Aug. 1 — Sunisa Lee of Saint Paul, Minn./Midwest Gymnastics Center, and Deanna West of Plano, Texas/WOGA, won their respective divisions at the 2014 U.S. Challenge at the Sears Centre Arena in Hoffman Estates, Ill. The U.S. Challenge features gymnasts in the Hopes Division of elite gymnastics.


Lee won the 10-11 age division with a 52.850. Tori Tatum of Chanhassen, Minn./Twin City Twisters, placed second (52.500) while Abigail Scanlon of Sterling, Va./Capital Gymnastics National Center, finished third (52.150).


In the 12-13 age division, West received the gold medal with a 53.600. Mikayla Hotaling of Royal Palm Beach, Fla./American Twisters, earned silver (51.700), and Amoree Lockhart of Ft. Worth, Texas/Empire Gymnastics Academy, got the bronze medal (51.400).


The U.S. Challenge is held in conjunction with the Secret U.S. Classic, scheduled for Aug. 2 with the junior elite session starting at 1 p.m. CT and the senior session at 6:30 p.m. CT. The Secret U.S. Classic is the final qualifying event for the P&G Gymnastics Championships, USA Gymnastics’ national championships, which will be held in Pittsburgh Aug. 20-24.
To qualify to the P&G Championships, senior elites must score at least a 54.000 in the all-around; have a three-event total of 41.250; or earn a total of 28.000 on two events. Juniors must have a 52.000 in the all-around at the Secret U.S. Classic.
